Writing Prompt

The school system should not block access to certain websites. as technology gets more and more available to schools, the demand for more online classes has increased. Therefore, more students need to be able to access the internet without being blocked of things that would not be deemed inappropriate.  Blocking software essentially damages learning opportunities. Instead of finding exactly what you need on the internet, you usually get blocked.

Someone against giving schools more educational opportunities might say that using blocking software prevents students from viewing material considered “harmful to minors”. But what my opponent doesn’t understand is that all these restrictions are actually harmful to minors’ education. How can you expect someone to grow if there are restricted on their learning material? The simple answer to that is just that they can’t.

If the CIPA thinks that not only restricting the students, but also the teachers, they are terribly wrong. Must lesson plans are online now. But how can the teachers be expected to create lesson plans online if even they are being restricted? Teachers’ jobs are to teach the students to the best of their abilities. But that goal cannot be accomplished if the blocking software won’t allow them to do their everyday internet things to get class around.

By blocking everything that isn’t in the schools curriculums, doesn’t allow for the growth in learning. It limits everyone from reaching their full potential as a student. Being a parent your job is to give your kids the best of your ability. Even though it might be a public school, I don’t think parents will appreciate having their tax dollars going towards their student(s) not being able to do certain things on the internet. It’s just not fair to anyone involved.

These are the reasons that the school systems should not block access to certain websites that are not directly related to the curriculum. The demand for using the internet on a daily basis has dramatically gone up. So the CIPA cannot expect people to live with blocked websites. it’s just not right. Blocking software damages learning opportunities
